Lucy's Story

“I had experienced recurrent periods of depression since I was a teenager. When I bought my first home aged 26 I developed an episode of hypomania which lasted a month. It wasn’t until I was about 36 that I was actually diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It seems to me that there is a reluctance to diagnose without a history of mania which is frustrating. Hypomania can cause a lot of regret and embarrassment. The stories I could tell!!!

I’ve accepted my diagnosis and the need to take regular medication to remain stable. Ditching alcohol has been key for me in avoiding severe episodes of depression. I’ve also now been diagnosed with two neurodivergent conditions which adds spiciness to my life! Despite these challenges, I am able to work full time as a health professional which gives me a great deal of satisfaction.”
