About Bipolar Scotland

We are Scotland’s charity for people living with bipolar. Our vision is for a good life for everyone in Scotland who lives with bipolar.

About Us

Bipolar Scotland is the national charity for people living with bipolar in Scotland.

Our vision is simple: a good life for everyone in Scotland who lives with bipolar.

We are a member-led community shaped by lived experience. Many of the people who guide our work, deliver our services and volunteer with us live with bipolar themselves. This insight sits at the heart of everything we do.

Our mission is to support our members to live well with bipolar, and increase public understanding of bipolar through lived experience.

Across Scotland, we bring people together through peer support, self-management training and trusted information that helps people feel understood and less alone. We support people at every stage of their journey, as well as families and loved ones.

Bipolar Scotland is a dynamic and growing organisation with a strong membership base, governed by a board of trustees elected from within our community.

Our strategy, “A Time for Transformation” (2026–2030), is driven by the belief that bipolar shouldn’t be a life sentence. We are working towards earlier diagnosis and better support, tackling health inequalities, improving understanding of bipolar, and amplifying the voices of people living with bipolar across Scotland.

Our work is guided by the values that matter most to our community:

Member-Led | Empathy & Honesty | Hope | Inclusion | Impact & Purpose

Working together

Through Bipolar's challenges

Bipolar Scotland is Scotland’s charity for anyone living with Bipolar. Offering life-changing support for almost three decades.

Our History

Bipolar Scotland began in 1992, when Dr Margaret Thomas and a small group of volunteers came together to create self-help groups for people living with bipolar.

From those early meetings, the organisation grew into the national charity we are today, supporting people and families across Scotland.

More than 30 years on, the spirit of those early groups still shapes our work.
